What are Writing Skills: How to Improve Writing Skills

We are going to look at, five ways to improve academic essay writing Or TOEFL writing, IELTS writing. This should not be done while writing a letter to your friends. We are talking especially about formal writing, business, or academic writing.

1. Create An Outline

An outline is defined as the points to be discussed in the whole article or essay. An effective way to create an effective writings product, create an outline. It helps the readers to pick a clear approach to that article. Furthermore, the outline is a way given by the writer to the readers to give the headlines regarding the topic. From the writers’ point of view, the outline reflects the great reputation of the writers. For example,

2. Choose Simple Words

The English language has an ocean of substitute words. As a writer, we can use alternative or substitute words for a specific word, undoubtedly, have the same meanings. So, try to use comparatively easy words and avoid complex or hard words.

3. Sentence Length

Conclude your required meaning into a short and managed sentence. Avoid long sentences which will confuse the reader to understand what the writer is saying. Moreover, short sentences make comprehension effective.

4. Be To The Point

Simply, avoid extra and useless comments in your essay. Just focus and write on your main idea or write to the point.

5. Do Not Use Contractions to Improve Writing Skills

The first tip is to improve writing is, do not to use contractions. Contraction is the short form of multiple words. It is the short form of (Two Words Put Into One) for example, “don’t” is the contraction of “do not.” So, it’s better to write the word in full form in academic and formal business writing.

Do Not Use Use This
Don’tDo not
Can’tCan not
Shouldn’tShould not
Couldn’tCould not
Wouldn’tWould not
Isn’tIs not
Haven’tHave not
Hasn’tHas not

Therefore, instead of using “don’t,” use “do not.” And instead of “can’t,” use “cannot.” Practice noticing how with “do not,” it’s actually two words. “Cannot” is just one word. “Shouldn’t” to “should not.” “Couldn’t” to “could not.” “Wouldn’t” becomes “would not.” “Isn’t” ch “is not.” “Haven’t” converts to “have not” “Hasn’t” to “has not.” So, use as above. use these.

6. Length of Paragraph

The effectiveness of the writing skills depends upon the length of paragraphs. A very long written paragraph puts the readers into complexities in such a way that they feel uneasy while compiling the meanings of the overall paragraph. Remember to touch both ends that neither create a very short paragraph nor very long. Keep it in average in the size.

7. Avoid Extra/ Unnecessary Words to Improve Writing Skills

Now, let us look at tip number 2. We should avoid extra and unnecessary words that add or remove no value to the sentence. Avoid writing/including “there is” or “there are.” So why should we avoid “there is” or “there are”? One of the reasons is when we write, we want to write our ideas clearly and concisely, meaning we don’t want these long sentences, we want our sentences to be to the point. There are “adds” extra words that are not needed. So let’s look at some examples.

“There are many issues that students can face at the university level. So, that’s the correct sentence, but if I wanted to make it a better sentence, that is more appropriate for academic writing, I would change it. I would get rid of “there are” and I would say instead “Students face many issues at university.” So you don’t need “there is” or “there are.”

A second example: “There are many development projects that the UN supports.” Again, we don’t need “there are.” We can just change it to “The UN supports many development projects.” By getting rid of “there is” and “there are” your sentences become stronger, and to the point.

8. Avoid Some Specific Words/Fillers

Don’t use words in academic writing such as “really, very, a lot,” I’m gonna add another one, so.This weakens your writing. Our writings aren’t as strong while using these kinds of words. So let’s look at some examples.

“Many students think university is very hard.” So, now, we have “very.” How could I improve the sentence? Well, instead of putting “very hard,” use a stronger word in the first place. The following sentence should be like “Many students think university is difficult.” so let’s look at another sentence: Bill 399 is really controversial. So again academic writing avoids the usage of really we get to say the built 399 is controversial.” Furthermore, I could say “a lot of the students live on campus”, now instead of using a lot, we could use the word many students. So, we use many if count the noun instead of using a lot.

We can use much to get rid of a lot. Now, we have many students who face problems in their first year of University. Another example; “Much time is wasted because of procrastination”. So many and much are both the words that are better to use than a lot and again the rule is to avoid the usage of really, very, a lot, and so

9. Imitation to Improve Writing Skills

Idealize one or more famous authors and study them thoroughly to take the ideas from their writings. Learn from their essay construction, sentences construction, use of words, writing styles, way of comprehension, article introduction, main part, and then conclusion. By focusing on all these contents, writings skills maybe but better.

10. Avoid Too Many Passive Voices

It comes to academic writing is unless. So, if we are in the sciences it is genuine to use passive voice sentences. Do not use it too much but moderately. But if we are studying the humanities, social science, history, psychology, and these kinds of subjects, do not use the passive voice. Use the active voice sentences for most University Writings, we use active voice sentences. So, what is the passive voice, and what is the active voice. Here is an example of the passive voice “Health care reforms were implemented by Obama.” Therefore, what is the problem with using the passive voice? It takes away the fact and reality that Obama is the one who implemented the reforms the sentence, is sort of weak a little bit awkward. It would be much better if we had Obama should act as subject and the object as health care reforms likely “Obama implemented health care reforms.”
